The 10 Companies Covering Abortion Travel Expenses

The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade sent shockwaves through the nation on June 24, 2022. Over the following days, dozens of employers have issued expanded benefits to include reimbursement for travel to obtain a legal abortion. Given the impact individual healthcare has on the work lives of individuals and their families, you should always consider the medical care plan an employer offers as part of the total compensation package.

Below are 10 companies offering travel reimbursements for medical expenses.

The Walt Disney Company

In an internal memo obtained by CNBC, The Walt Disney Company noted, “Our company remains committed to removing barriers and providing comprehensive access to quality and affordable care for all of our employees, cast members, and their families, including family planning and reproductive care, no matter where they live.” The memo further explains travel benefits will cover medical treatments and family planning services.

JPMorgan Chase

The large financial company noted in an internal memo obtained by CNBC, “Effective in July, you will be able to access additional covered benefits under the U.S. Medical Plan” including “family-building benefits.” The company also explicitly notes their benefits include travel benefits for legal abortion.

WarnerBros Discovery

The entertainment company recently replied to NBC News noting they expanded their “healthcare benefits options to cover transportation expenses for employees and their covered family members who need to travel to access abortion and reproductive care.”

Netflix

The streaming company responded to Business Insider to ensure their benefit plan reimburses employee expenses along with their dependents up to a lifetime amount of $10,000 who need to travel for medical care including, cancer treatment, gender-affirming treatment, or abortions.

Dicks Sporting Goods

The recreation retail chain is promising up to $4,000 for travel expenses related to accessing legal abortion. This benefit will be available to spouses and dependents enrolled in their medical plans.

Target

The clothing retailer notified their employees of their long-standing support for covering travel-related expenses when medical treatment was out of the employee area. The memo also noted this coverage will include services for mental health and reproductive care.

Chobani

The founder and CEO of the yogurt company, Hamdi Ulukaya, publicly issued a statement saying they modified their health plan to cover travel expenses for health care outside the local area and this would be extended to reproductive care.

DoorDash

The tech company assured its employees they will cover specific travel expenses who are enrolled in their health plan for out-of-state abortion care and are located in a place where access is limited.

Tesla

The car manufacturer noted in their 2021 Impact Report, that they have expanded their health coverage to include “travel and lodging support for those who may need to seek healthcare services in their home state.”

Citigroup

The financial service company was an early adopter to ensure its employees have access to legal abortions. In its annual proxy statement to shareholders, the company noted it will “provide travel benefits to facilitate access to adequate resources.”
