Urban Advantage Family Outreach Manager

The Gottesman Center for Science Teaching and Learning brings together, in one organizational structure, all the Museum’s activities directed towards K-12 schools and teacher education. Urban Advantage (UA) is a science education partnership program that brings together eight New York City science-rich cultural institutions and currently serves over 320 public schools, and over 950 science teachers in grades 3 through 8. The Family Outreach Manager will work with a team of educators at AMNH and 7 other UA partner institutions to support a network of family engagement across the partnership,, the NYCDOE STEM department, NYCDOE Family and Community Engagement office, and UA participating schools in a way that is reflective of the current research on family engagement and how people learn science. The Manager will guide and support innovative professional learning (PL) workshops for PCs that help PCs lead families on content relevant, culturally responsive, engaging trips to UA cultural institutions, provide foundational materials and support to UA partners on how to communicate with parents and adult caregivers on the topic of building a shared vision around high quality science instruction and academic standards. This position will work collaboratively with Parent Coordinators (PCs), and other community members in UA schools, to engage families in the programs offered by UA and promote the utilization of UA components and resources. This position will work to support a network of UA science partners and NYCDOE and Charter school-UA parent coordinators (PCs); this includes building relationships and competencies among the UA partners and among the PCs in our UA schools. The successful candidate is a highly organized individual, an excellent communicator with deep experience in community engagement, and is up to date on current research on how to engage and support families. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Co-develop a strategic plan for family engagement that helps PCs implement UA family outreach events (such as family science days, family science nights and school community field trips), uses UA taught strategies to develop relevant family engagement experiences in our UA partner institutions and at their schools, and that meets the needs of PCs with a range of experience in their field and in UA.
• Manage all logistics and administrative tasks related to the implementation of a UA family engagement plan (short- and long-term), including, but not limited to: a) Create and implement orientation and kick-off events and a research-based UA PC workshop framework b) Developing a toolkit for UA partners and participating NYCDOE parent coordinators c) Planning and organizing the family science day event at AMNH, and across the consortium.
• Work one-on-one and in teams with the NYCDOE & Charter School parent coordinators to provide additional personalized coaching as they navigate using the UA resources.
• Manage the engagement of the NYCDOE-UA family community both onsite and online. The online community will be created and maintained using various platforms including Moodle, Gather.Town, and Zoom.
• Coordinate and support the organization and implementation of the annual UA family kick-off events, at AMNH and UA partner institutions, and the end of year event, at AMNH. These events take place each fall (kick-off events) and in June. Other events may be added.
• Coordinate the collection of evaluation and usage data regarding engagement and resources usage and create summary reports and statistical and program analyses to inform supervisors and make recommendations to improve overall program performance.
• As needed, provide programmatic support crucial to achieving the mission and goals of all components of Urban Advantage and the AMNH Gottesman Center.
• Manage collaboration among diverse UA partners to support alignment of their work with the family outreach goals of the UA program.
• Identify PCs who need more support engaging families and promoting family field trips to UA institutions, and provide support through school visits.
• Interact with public middle schools and the administrative hierarchies that govern them, including the NYC Department of Education and the Office of Family Engagement, to understand family engagement in action and identify district family engagement priorities.
• Manage schools’ requests for support with family engagement events and provide help to UA staff to support visits to UA schools.
? Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience? A balance of detail-oriented execution and big picture thinking. ? A learner’s mindset: excitement to learn and continuously expand your knowledge.? A team player with strong interpersonal skills. Able to build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders and teammates while maintaining programmatic standards and attending to work-life balance.? Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs
? Available to work a schedule that includes some weekends and remote work.
? Three or more years’ experience working with students and families/adult caregivers, or community-based organizations? Knowledge of the history or the NYC public school system and first-hand experience with the NYC school system ? Demonstrated ability in program management and short- and long-term goal setting. ? Knowledge of city, state, and national learning and performance standards in elementary and middle school science.
