This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s mission and strategic plan by serving as a statewide public health program specialist providing technical assistance to health care providers and Newborn Screening (NBS) contractors or vendors in health program planning, NBS follow-up protocols, and reporting requirements. The Health Program Specialist (HPS) I functions as a highly skilled, technical program consultant, lead, and liaison for the California Children’s Services Special Care Centers that are contracted to provide consultation and follow-up for newborns identified as screen positive for a disorder detected by the California Newborn Screening Program. The HPS I will provide oversight in regard to contract scope of work and protocols as well as education and technical support in the use of the Genetic Disease Screening Program’s Screening Information System to provide follow-up documentation, including possible travel for site visits.
The incumbent works under the direction of the Health Program Manager I, Newborn Follow-Up and Contract Unit Chief.
Candidates interested in this position are encouraged to take the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) Health Program Specialist I exam. Exams are administered bi-monthly.
