What is the Role?
Coney Island Prep is looking for an amazing High School Apprentice Teacher to join us for the 2021-2022 school year! Located in the Gravesend neighborhood of Brooklyn, our high school was founded in 2013 and operates grades ninth through twelfth grade. Teachers teach engaging lessons created from research-based, standards aligned, curriculum (UnboundEd/Quill for English, Agile Minds for math, and Teacher Created for science). These curricula aim to serve as windows and mirrors for our students to help them understand more about the world and themselves.
What is it like to teach with us? Great question! At CIPHS, teachers are afforded the opportunity to teach standard, 50-minute class periods, as well as one longer 90-minute class period in a given week. This allows teachers to get creative with their lessons and take deep dives into content with exploratory lessons, science labs, Socratic Seminars, and other deep intellectual tasks. To prepare adequately for these engaging lessons, teachers at CIPHS can expect about three planning periods in a day, as well as time to collaborate with colleagues on their grade level and within content team meetings. Working together, CIPHS teachers create dynamic and engaging lessons that build scholars’ intellectual curiosity and prepare them for college and career.
The Apprentice Teacher position is a great opportunity for recent college graduates who are interested in a career in education, but do not have prior teaching experience or New York state certification. Offers to become a Coney Island Prep Apprentice Teacher are contingent upon acceptance into the Relay Graduate School of Education Teaching Residency, a two-year apprenticeship that allows you to gain valuable experience by taking on responsibilities both inside and outside of the classroom while receiving exceptional professional development throughout the year. Upon successfully completing the program, residents receive a Masters in the Art of Teaching (M.A.T.) degree and New York state certification.
The total cost of the Masters degree is highly subsidized through AmeriCorps grants and financial aid from Coney Island Prep, lowering the out-of-pocket expenses to just $1,500 per year. Your schedule as an Apprentice teacher will be created to accommodate your classes at Relay, and the support you receive from Coney Island Prep will be in conjunction with your coursework. As an Apprentice Teacher, you will receive training in many aspects of teaching, including mindsets and professionalism, classroom management, and teaching a rigorous, complete lesson.
What You’ll Be Asked To Do
- Assume a high level of personal responsibility for the progress of all students
- Create academically rigorous and culturally relevant lesson plans, materials, and assessments, and differentiate as needed
- Teach engaging, rigorous, and relevant lessons daily
- Communicate effectively with all stakeholders, including scholars, families, and staff
- Commit to a school culture of consistency by implementing school-wide systems, structures, and procedures while reflecting on one’s own implicit biases
- Reflect on various data sources to improve your practice
- Take on a proactive role in creating a positive, structured, results-oriented and fun school that supports the needs of students of various abilities and experiences

Who Are We?
Coney Island Prep is a college preparatory public charter school in Brooklyn, New York. Merging growth, performance, and commitment, the Coney Island Prep community takes its responsibility to prepare students for the college and career of their choice very seriously, but not ourselves. We balance our sense of ownership and responsibility with humility and levity and support each other every step of the way. Coney Island Prep currently serves over 1,000 scholars across its four schools, including:
- 200 scholars in kindergarten – second grade at the lower elementary school
- 220 scholars in third – fifth grade at the upper elementary school
- 280 scholars in sixth – eighth grades at the middle school
- 340 scholars in ninth-twelfth grade at the high school

In addition to sharing our blueprint in approaching virtual and at distance learning, we have allocated resources for familial support, distributed hundreds of devices to sustain techquity amongst students, and provided over 100,000 meals throughout the south Brooklyn neighborhood to date.
As we strive towards a future where we can resume in-person teaching, we have designed and executed on plans to provide testing resources and contingency plans for campuses. Furthermore, our teams are leveraging technology, trauma informed practices, & health & safety protocols to ensure we are meeting our mission of putting students first. Despite the constraints that distance learning provides, educators are still responsible for connecting with students, fostering critical thinking, sustaining high expectations all while operating safely, efficiently, and effectively.
Benefits and Compensation
- Employees at Coney Island Prep are provided with a generous salary and an annual retention bonus after their first year. Our salaries are highly competitive, set through a lens of equity, and based on an individual’s skills and experiences relevant to the role. The salary for Apprentice Teachers is $50,000.
