PEER RECOVERY / SUPPORT SPECIALIST (On Call)
Peer Support Specialists are people in a peer designated role providing direct services with a personal experience of recovery from mental health, substance use, or trauma conditions who receive specialized training and supervision to guide and support others who are experiencing similar mental health, substance use or trauma issues toward increased wellness. A Peer Support Specialist is an individual who has made a personal commitment to his or her own recovery, has maintained that recovery over a period of time, has taken the 80-hour Peer Support Learning training (or equivalent) to work in mutuality with others, and is willing to share what he or she has learned about recovery in an inspirational way.
Education and Experience
- Minimum of a high school diploma/GED
- A valid California driver’s license preferred
- A mental health/SUD lived experience
- 80-hour Peer Support Learning or equivalent – successfully completed within 90 days of hire or has taken the training within 2 years of hire
- Has current techniques of behavioral intervention training within six (6) months of hire
Peer Support Specialists are expected to be open-minded, effective, inclusive, collaborative, encourage mutuality and support the decrease of stigma. This position shall provide the following supports:
- Engagement skills (Resiliency training)
- Supporting people in recovery goals and building resiliency (core gifts and resiliency training materials)
- Community networking
- Advocacy skills (WRAP)
- Mentoring skills
- Leadership skills
- Parenting skills, as applicable
- Interpersonal relationship skills (DBT when available)
- Navigating and supporting others through the system
- The following activities shall be included as applicable:
- Life skills
- Goal setting
- Decision making skills
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES – Essential Functions:
- Engage in collaborative and caring relationships through communication and engagement strategies that promote recovery, resilience and wellness
- Share lived experiences of recovery
- Provide face to face interaction that support a person served in achieving their self-identified level of recovery, wellness, independence or personal strength
- Provide trained peer-to-peer support in groups encouraging and supporting participation and self-directed participation
- Mentor Community Integration activities (one-to-one or in group)
- Provide emotional support during the acquisition, exploration and sustaining of employment and/or educational services
- Attend treatment team and program meetings
- All other duties as assigned
- Professional Responsibilities:
- Ability to work as a team member
- Serve as role model and leader to fellow team members
- Must meet in-service requirements.
