Originally founded in 1991 as Harlem RBI, DREAM has grown to annually serve more than 2,500 youth across East Harlem and the South Bronx through a network of six PreK-12, extended-day, extended-year DREAM Charter Schools and community sports-based youth development programs. Through our commitment to rigorous academics, social-emotional learning, deep family and community engagement, and health and wellness, we create lifelong learners who are equipped to fulfill their vision of success in and out of the classroom. We dream big, as well, with an aggressive five-year plan to expand to serve 3,500 students across seven schools—growing our organization’s impact and leveling the playing field for all children. DREAM (formerly known as DREAM Charter School and Harlem RBI), is an innovative educational and youth development organization, serving over 2,500 East Harlem and South Bronx youth in 6 schools. Through its network of rigorous PK-12 public charter schools and out-of-school time programs, DREAM connects youth and families to rigorous, student-centered academics, age-appropriate programs, and passionate professional staff in an intensive multi-year commitment to truly serve the whole child and community.
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Elementary Programs, the Summer Reading Teacher will be responsible for leading a Reader’s Workshop with groups of 18-22 elementary school students, which includes creating a culminating project, in our REAL Kids program. Summer Reading Teachers also lead off-site field trips, and collaborate closely with college-age Youth Workers, supporting them in leading small group activities (centers) and supporting their success as aspiring educators. This is an exciting opportunity for results-driven, innovative teachers to stretch their skills by using an interdisciplinary approach to literacy, coaching staff, and contributing to educational equity for all students in DREAM’s communities.
*Leading an interactive 2-hour literacy workshop, 4 days a week, designed for students to maintain or improve their reading levels (Reader’s Workshop);
*Weekly coaching of 2-3 college-age Youth Workers to ensure they are productively supporting classroom activities;
*Designing and implementing lesson plans and projects aligned to the REAL Kids curriculum, which is designed to foster social-emotional learning;
*Supporting activities designed to improve communication and social skills during Team Clubhouse, four days a week;Implementing all health and safety protocols as required, including ensuring child safety and responding appropriately to any incidents;
*Leading off-site field trips to pre-arranged destinations in New York City, one day per week (may not apply due to health and safety restrictions).
*Demonstrated ability to execute a literacy curriculum, and customize units, lessons, and projects to best meet students’ interests and needs;
*2+ years of lead classroom teaching or similar experience required;
*State or city certification and an M.A. in Education preferred;Understanding of youth development as it relates to education;
*Ability to take initiative and maintain flexibility;Deep embodiment of DREAM’s mission and values, including a belief that all children can succeed;Must be able to work in-person at the program site during program hours.
*Program dates: July 6 to August 13, 2021 (online and onsite training begins in late June)
*Summer Reading Teacher hours: Monday-Thursdays: 8am-1pm, Fridays: 9am-3pm
*One additional hour of planning at a time to be determined
