The Department of Psychology at Mills College invites applications for a part-time Assistant Adjunct Professor to teach PSYC 49: Fundamentals of Psychology, to begin in Fall 2021. The course will be taught online via Zoom using the Canvas learning management system (both are used by online teaching faculty at Mills). Fundamentals of Psychology is the first course in psychology in the department curriculum and is taken by both majors and non-majors. The psychology major is among the largest at Mills, attracting dynamic and diverse students with a wide range of backgrounds and interests.
Fundamentals of psychology covers the subject matter, methods, and current status of psychology, including brain function, child development, perception, learning and thinking, motivation and emotion, personality, psychopathology, and social psychology. The focus is on human behavior, with only limited reference to animal research, and includes cross-cultural and issues of diversity and inclusion where applicable.
For faculty new to Mills, compensation is $6,500 per course with a terminal degree and $6,000 per course without a terminal degree. Adjunct compensation is governed by a Collective Bargaining Agreement and increases with seniority at Mills College.
Candidates should have:
• A Ph.D. or be a current doctoral student in psychology
• Undergraduate teaching experience in Psychology (ideally, Fundamentals of Psychology)
• A commitment to undergraduate teaching
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• The ability to work with a diverse and dynamic student population
This is an exempt, part-time position. The compensation includes state-mandated benefits including Social Security, State Disability Insurance, Workers’ Compensation Insurance, Unemployment Insurance and Sick Day accrual. Employees also receive free admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness center, and tennis courts.
