Under the direction of an assigned Department Head and area faculty provide technical assistance for the Sculpture and Ceramics areas in the Art Department; oversee the management of the wood, metal and ceramic shops and tool room; research, budget, and purchase tools and supplies; coordinate maintenance of tools; recruit and train student shop monitors; develop and implement shop safety guidelines; provide shop safety demonstrations.

This includes demonstrating patience, thoughtful language, appropriate/safe attire (for the studios and shops), and safe working methods in the studio. The Shop Technician, TA, and Faculty need to demonstrate sensitivity, kindness and support to our colleagues, peers, staff, and students at all times.
Sculpture and Ceramics Areas
• Under the supervision of the Faculty, maintain department facilities, coordinate student equipment and studio access, and support and train area faculty and students in the safe use and care of all the equipment.
• Coordinate the use of departmental and College resources to meet OSHA standards.
• Promote, publish and teach best practices for the safe use, storage and disposal of any toxic materials according to established State and local guidelines. Coordinate disposal of hazardous materials with outside contractors. Review hazardous waste protocols with faculty.
• Coordinate the repair or replacement of tools, accounting for safety, student access to appropriate and updated technologies, and departmental budgets.
• Interface with the appropriate College staff to coordinate larger structural repairs and upgrades to the studio facilities.
• With the Faculty supervision coordinate supply inventories and make suitable purchases where required; this includes researching vendors and working with faculty to assess needs and coordinate with course requirements.
• Review and monitor assigned budget, assuring that proper accounts are charged and budgets are reconciled. Coordinate receipts with Office Administrator.
• Collaborate with area faculty in the ongoing development of the Art Department facilities, researching and helping to implement studio and equipment upgrades that reflect course development.
• Establish and maintain effective and productive working relationships within a diverse and multicultural environment.
• Establish and maintain productive relationships with all persons contacted in the course of the job performance.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
• Work with area faculty to create and facilitate a regular supplemental workshop schedule that supports the technical development of students and dovetails with course curricula.
• Provide comprehensive technical support for the 3D fabrication facility. The facility includes a metal fabrication facility (with MIG, TIG, and oxy-acetylene welding stations, Band Saws, Chop Saw, sanding/ grinding stations, and a Plasma torch) and a wood fabrication facility (including a table saw, jointer, planer, router table, and various other power tools). Duties include regular maintenance, inventory management, researching technological developments and facilitating the safe and effective use of these resources in the realization of student work
• Support ongoing faculty training in the use of 3D fabrication techniques in the classroom. Assist in the creation of supplemental educational resources specific to 3D fabrication.
• Maintain good repair, and provide technical support for the safe and effective use of the sculpture area equipment in the tool “room”, which includes an extensive array of hand and small power tools as well as two industrial sewing machines.
• Coordinate the use of, and maintain safe operation of, the spray booth.
• Maintain and provide technical support for the safe and effective use of all equipment (including kilns, spray booth, clay mixers and various hand tools) and materials (including a wide range of glazes, underglazes, clay, paints and adhesives).
• Provide technical support for mold making production.
• Procedures and regulations for the safe usage and disposal of hazardous materials.
• Art terminology and techniques related to these studio areas.
• Extensive and demonstrable knowledge of the following computer programs using a Mac platform:
• Google (Gmail, Sheets, Docs, Calendars, & Surveys), Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop CS and or other budget management software
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Proper and safe use of a wide array of fabrication equipment and materials.
• Safety policies, practices and procedures required by the College and the Art Department.
• Communicate clearly and effectively, either orally or in writing.
• Receive and follow through on detailed oral and/or written instructions.
• Utilize professionalism, tact, patience and courtesy in working with others.
• Treat all faculty and students with equal respect and professionalism.
• Demonstrate punctuality.
• Plan, prioritize, organize and anticipate the needs of the assigned studio areas.
• Understand technical terminology related to the assigned studio areas.
• Explain relevant techniques and procedures to students, faculty and graduate student assistants.
• Train students, faculty, and staffin safe work practices.
• Establish and maintain effective and productive working relationships with others in a anti-sexist, multicultural Antiracist setting.
• Work independently.
• Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
• Observe health and safety regulations related to hazardous materials and waste disposal.
• Practice consistent attention to detail.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field with 3-5 years of relevant experience.
• Art studio educational environment.
• Regular exposure to volatile and non-volatile chemicals and hazardous/toxic materials.
• Seeing to prepare chemicals and operate instrumentation.
• Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
• Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, various laboratory equipment and to handle chemicals safely.
• Lifting moderately heavy objects.
• Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
• Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
• Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
• Hazardous and toxic materials.
This is a part-time, non-exempt position. Hourly rate is $28 per hour and includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, 10 days of vacation for year one, 15 days of vacation for years 2-10, and 22 days of vacation years 10+ plus, 12 sick days and 17 paid holidays (subject to annual review).
