Job Description

Job Title: Teacher Assistant

Reports To: Program Manager and Campus Director

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary: Assists teaching staff with student instruction and with direct supervision; participates in academic and classroom activities, and in the development and implementation of a student’s behavioral program including developing positive relationships, crisis intervention and implementation of school policies and procedures by performing the following duties.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Assist in the direct supervision of students on campus.

Assist in disciplining of students within the boundaries of school policy.

Assist in advising students and teachers in the resolution of individual student behavioral problems.

Assist in overseeing the supervision of safety and security of students, buildings and grounds

Assist in guiding students concerning personal and school programs.

Document incident reports relative to incidents of vandalism, inappropriate student behavior and other violations of school policies and procedures.

Work with Administration ensuring student programming of IEP goals.

Consistently reports all pertinent student information to the Program Manager.

Exhibits a high level of consistency in following through with Somerset’s protocols, policies and procedures.

Assess student crisis issues and appropriately resolve or after having exhausted all verbal techniques to call for administrative assistance and assist with Pro-Act safety techniques, if needed.

Responsible for supervising movement of students.

Maintain CPR/First Aid Training and Pro Act Certification

Effectively communicate in both written and verbal form.

Communicates measurable learning objectives; guides students towards mastery of objectives; checks for understanding frequently.

Utilizes appropriate instructional materials and techniques.

Organizes the classroom to maximize opportunities for instruction.

Communicates to students about their Individualized Education Plan goals regularly.

Circulates among students, provides frequent individual attention; corrects student errors in a positive and timely manner.

Observes and records student progress daily; implements lesson plans as designed by teacher; maintains appropriate level of student supervision at all times.

Assists students in personal hygiene, which may include but not limited to toileting, oral hygiene and changing clothes.

Demonstrates an understanding of students’ diagnosis.

Assists in maintaining academic charting and completion of homework.

Implements interventions as prescribed in the treatment plan.

Utilizes a variety of incentives and rewards, both tangible and social.

Transports students to and from school following company procedures

Participates in the implementation of treatment plans.

Fosters student motivation through enthusiasm and encouragement.

Follows all classroom/school policies and procedures thereby setting an example to students.

Maintains professional behavior during conflict situations.

Communicates and interacts with co-workers, parents and care providers in a professional manner.

Maintains proficient driving ability at all times.

Follow all school transportation policies on pre-trip inspections, documentation of attendance, mileage and maintenance records.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Ability to perform authorized restraint procedures when necessary, analyze situations carefully and adopt effective courses of action; work effectively in the absence of supervision; provide first aid and CPR; work under high stress; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; direct traffic; perform physical activities such as running or walking and standing for prolonged periods of time under adverse weather condition; learn and apply codes and school policies; establish and maintain records and make detailed, concise written report; understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Must attend job trainings as directed by employer to comply with state and federal regulations.

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Math Ability:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software and internet software.

CPR

First Aid

Valid Driver’s License meeting required company insurance criteria

The employee may frequently be exposed to students who may ask inappropriate personal questions, display socially unacceptable personal behaviors; insult your physical appearance, age, sex and race, use profanity, sexually explicit phrases; exhibit defiance, dishonesty, threats, accusations and theft, assaultive behaviors and self-destructive behaviors. You may be exposed to bodily fluids, such as spit, urine, feces, blood, etc. The work environment may be extremely stressful both physically and emotionally.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
