About:The South Asian Heart Center offers a unique opportunity to work with a diverse and experienced team focused on reducing the incidence of diabetes and coronary artery disease in the South Asian community. Clinical Follow Up and Heart Health Coaching Volunteers work directly with participants to help them incorporate healthy lifestyle habits. Program participants find that behavioral changes are easier to make with regular and frequent follow up. A recent study also showed that culturally competent heart health coaching by the Center’s volunteer coaches resulted in significant improvement in markers for heart disease.Volunteer ResponsibilitiesInterns connect directly by phone with program participants and motivate them to embrace recommendedlifestyle changes for better heart and diabetes health.• Connect with an assigned set of participants at their annual touch point• Monitor progress against lifestyle goals and recommendations; encourage periodic testing• Update electronic medical records including test results, progress and compliance• Participate in health fairs and other outreach events hosted by the CenterQualifications• Ideal position for public health/ prospective medical school students/ foreign medical graduates• Good verbal and written communication skills in English• Good typing and keyboarding skills required• Good computer skills especially with MS Word and MS Excel• Enthusiastic attitude and strong work ethic• Ability to work independently and as part of a team• Experience with one-on-one counseling/interviewing Basic understanding of one or more South Asian languages is a plusKnowledge of South Asian diet and lifestyleCommitment• 6 months to 1 year minimum, but flexible start and end dates• Estimated 12-15 hours/week requested, but flexible hours• On-site at any of our locations, weekdays between 8am – 5 pm.• Flexible schedule but may vary based on Center’s needs• 2 week mandatory initial training including orientation on program, coaching process and electronic medical recordsBenefits• Gain and translate actual academic knowledge into tangible industry skills• Learn critical ‘patient’ interaction skills in a nurturing environment• Make professional and peer contacts in the field• Get a performance-based referenceCurrent Medical Student’s Testimonial“In the past eighteen months, I have worked as a health coach helping participants create lifestyle changes,participated in community outreach, and conducted research examining outcomes in our program participants.
