Job Summary:

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Health and Wellness and Director of CAPS, the Sexual Violence Resource Advocate (“Advocate”) provides direct support to students who have experienced sexual and gender-based violence (sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking) with advocacy and assistance getting them connecting to on and off campus resources. The Advocate will provide services designed to minimize the impact of sexual and gender-based violence on the academic and personal pursuits of students through effective case management and the coordination of care between campus and community resources.

The position works closely with the Office of the Dean of Students, Title IX Office, and CAPS to assist with various aspects of administration regarding triage and crisis situations in regards to sexual and gender-based violence. The Advocate also provides crisis intervention, consultation and programming to the campus community.

This position may also carry a small caseload in counseling and psychological services.

As a member of the larger staff in Student Life, the Sexual Violence Resource Advocate collaborates and cooperates to create leadership and intercultural competence opportunities to support student learning and development in the Jesuit Catholic tradition. The mission of Student Life is to fully support holistic student development within a social justice framework centered in preparing students to be caring, socially responsible citizens in our global and local community.

Job Responsibilities

• Provides direct services, including confidential counseling, as an advocate and campus resource to students to address matters of sexual and gender-based violence and misconduct in compliance with federal and state laws including Clery Act, Title IX, VAWA and all relevant resolutions and arrangements;

• Advises students regarding options, victim rights, and on- and off-campus resources. Provides crisis response, referrals, and support to complainants involved in formal campus grievance processes;

• May assist and/or accompany victims to local law enforcement for reporting, to obtain protective orders, and/or medical services (e.g., receiving a sexual assault examination kit);

• Assists with developing and implementing culturally competent prevention education, training, and programming with appropriate offices for students, faculty, staff, and administrators and other targeted audiences to better assist the university campus in understanding and preventing sexual and gender-based violence in accordance with best practices;

• Works collaboratively with offices including the Title IX Office, Cultural Centers, Office of the Dean of Students, Diversity Engagement and Community Outreach (DECO), and Center for Academic and Student Achievement (CASA);

• Establishes comprehensive plans of support utilizing appropriate on campus and community services/providers. Re-evaluates and adjusts the plan according to need over time; partners with the student and collaborates with other relevant parties.

• Coordinates the efforts of various providers and facilitates communication among providers to ensure the student receives quality service.

• Advocates for the student as they negotiate the academic, student life, and health care landscape by working with relevant on campus and off campus providers to ensure the student’s needs and accommodations are understood.

• Initiates and develops on-going liaison relationships with community health providers, sexual violence/gender based violence service providers and other resources.

• Educates and advises students in the development of self-advocacy skills.

• Provide comprehensive counseling services to student working within a brief therapy model

• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director.

Minimum Requirements

• CA License required within 6 months of hire in one of the following professions: Psychologist (PhD, PsyD or EdD), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Professional Counselor;

• Two years of related experience working with clients in a position involving the provision of victim services and/or peer counseling preferred;

• Current working knowledge of sexual assault and trauma services and supports both locally and national resources;

• Experience developing and/or implementing curriculum and programming on topics related to victim advocacy, sexual and gender-based violence, and referral support.

Qualifications

• Understanding of the issues surrounding sexual assault and a familiarity with the needs of survivors and their families and friends;

• Knowledge of current college-health related needs, cultures, and trends, specifically related to campus sexual violence;

• Knowledge of, or ability to learn, campus policies and procedures related to Title IX and sexual misconduct response to assist victims in comprehending grievance options available;

• Ability and commitment to maintain confidentiality, listen well with strong communication skills, be empathic, a good problem solver, and offer non-judgmental caring

• Ability to effectively work and interact respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment;

• Ability to manage multiple, ongoing, and complex caseloads;

• Excellent attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to handle sensitive information with tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality;

• Strong presentation and facilitation skills;

• Strong written and oral communication skills;

• Commitment to, and understanding of, a diverse, urban institution;

• A demonstrated interest in, and a commitment to, the mission of a Jesuit institution;

• Knowledge and skill with current technology is also preferred;

• Some evening and weekend work may be required; and

• Experience successfully addressing issues of a confidential and sensitive nature (Discretion, good judgement, and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality).
