Accepted an Offer? What to Know Before You Reneging

Accepting a job or internship offer is an important milestone in your professional journey. Once you accept an offer, either verbally or in writing, you are making a professional commitment to that employer. The Office of Career & Professional Development (OCPD) encourages students to make thoughtful, informed decisions and to seek guidance before accepting or declining any opportunity.

OCPD is here to help you evaluate offers, understand your options, and make decisions that support your long-term career success.

What Is Reneging?

Reneging (ri-NEG-ing) occurs when a student accepts a job or internship offer and later declines it to pursue another opportunity. This action is considered unprofessional in the hiring process and can have lasting consequences for you, employers, and the University community.

We strongly encourage students to carefully consider all offers before accepting and to consult with OCPD if unsure.

Why Your Decision Matters

Impact on Employers

  • Employers invest significant time and resources in recruiting and hiring students.
  • Reneging may harm your professional reputation and relationships with employers.
  • Employers may reconsider future recruiting at the University of Redlands.

Impact on the University of Redlands Community

  • Employer relationships are critical to providing opportunities for Redlands students.
  • Reneging can affect employer trust and future recruiting partnerships.
  • It may reduce opportunities available to fellow students and alumni.

Impact on You

  • Your professional reputation may be negatively affected.
  • Opportunities with that employer, or within that professional network, may be limited in the future.
  • Professional industries are often interconnected, and your decisions may follow you throughout your career.

Before Accepting an Offer

Take Time to Evaluate the Opportunity

Consider how the position aligns with your career goals, interests, and values. Important factors may include:

  • Job responsibilities
  • Work environment
  • Location and schedule
  • Salary and benefits
  • Opportunities for growth

Ask for More Time If Needed

If you need additional time to decide, it is appropriate to request an extension. Employers often understand that students are evaluating multiple opportunities. It is better to request more time than to accept and later decline.

Communicate Professionally

Ask questions and clarify expectations before accepting. Make sure you fully understand the role and your responsibilities.

If You Are Considering Declining an Offer
