A Parents Guide to Every Career Stage

Parents play a pivotal role in their child’s University experience and their decisions for the future. However, the world of work is quite different than 30, 20 or even 10 years ago. In order to best help your student,  it is important to understand the resources and opportunities available for your Bulldog student. You can play an integral role as your student navigates through their time at the University of Redlands and prepares for their future.

Resources to share with your student:

  • If they are trying to figure out what to study:
    • Encourage them to explore What Can I Do with this Major to explore common career paths associated within different areas of study.
    • Have them revisit their Focus2 Results, something that they took prior to starting at the University.
    • Encourage them to try an internship to uncover or affirm areas of interest.
  • If they are seeking a job or internship:
    • Encourage them to complete their Handshake profile, and use this resource to search for jobs/internships. They can set up a job agent within Handshake to email them internships of interest. This can help them begin to understand what opportunities exist.
    • Encourage your student to check out Careershift, another great resource to seek internships or jobs, and to conduct research on different companies in a variety of industries.
  • If they are trying to land a first job or internship
    • Encourage them to practice their interview skills. They can set up an interview through the OCPD, or they can practice virtually using StandOut.
    • Encourage them to get their resume and cover letter reviewed in the Career Studio, and to check out the How To pages for support as they create their documents.
    • Encourage them to negotiate their salary. They can review resources on our website, or come into the Career Studio to chat with our team.

In the Office of Career & Professional Development, we like to say that we are in students corners from the day of admission until the day they retire.  However, sometimes students might not know that we are here for them, or they might be intimidated to chat with us, thinking they need to have the answers first.  Your encouragement to check out a resource online, or visit our office might be just what they need.  We appreciate your support as we aim to ensure 100% of our students have the support they need to reach their future goals and aspirations.
